A long time ago, there lived a girl who was called Red Riding Hood because she was always wore a red cloak and hood in winter to keep her warm and hot.

One day her mother asked her to take a basket full of food to her grandfather who lived at the other side of the forest. She put on her cloak and her hood, picked up the basket and started out on the long journey through the forest on the way she met a dog “where are you going little girl?” asked the dog. “I am taking this this basket of food to my grandfather who lives at the other side of the forest.” said the little Red Hood. “Oh” said the dog with a grin. “Go carefully through the forest as there are many dangerous wild animals out there” then off ran the dog. The cleaver dog took a shortcut running as fast as he could to reaching the old man’s cottage he knocked at the door “who is there?” called out the grandfather. “It is Red Hood” answered the dog. The old man lifted the latch allowing the dog to walk in. Before the old man had time to cry out, the dog pounced on him and ate him up.

“It is better to see you my dear” said the cleaver dog. “Grandfather, what big ears you got there” better to hear you with said the cleaver dog. “What big teeth you have got there, grandfather?” all the better to eat you with said the dog as he jumped out of the bed and ate the little girl.

Lesson: It is good to know better our friends as they can be dangerous to our lives.

Once upon a time, there was a neighbour called Mr Cat. He lived near a family of weaver birds; he caught many mice before he became old and weak. For many days, Mr Cat went out but he was not able to catch anything that day. One day, he thought of a trick. He dressed himself like a doctor and went to Mrs Weaver bird’s house. Mrs Weaver bird’s young children were playing outside the window of their house. When they saw Mr Cat, they ran inside and hid themselves. Mrs Weaver bird did not know what the matter was with her children. She went to the window and looked outside. “Oh it is Mr Cat, he wants to play a trick,” said Mrs Weaver bird. She went back to the room and whispered something into Mr Weaver bird’s ear. Before he came back home, Mr Weaver bird had been collecting insects for their children to eat. Mr Weaver bird said to his wife, “Go and find out what Mr Cat wants.”

Mrs Weaver bird didn’t go to the door instead went to the window and shouted to Mr Cat, “Do you want anything from us?” “Oh no, thank you Mrs Weaver bird; allow me to help you.” said Mr Cat. “Oh no, thank you Mr Cat” answered Mrs Weaver bird, “We are all well and happy and we do not need any help from you.” So Mr Cat could not catch any of Mrs Weaver bird’s children. He went back very sad. When Mr Cat had gone, Mrs Weaver bird gathered together all her children and asked them, “Why did you all run away?” The children answered, we had seen Mr Cat before you saw him and we were afraid. You did well to run away and hide. I want you to hide whenever you see a cat. From that day Mrs Weaver bird’s children have been very careful about cats. They always stay inside their house until they learn to fly.

Once upon a time, the three animals Monkey, Lion and Hare were friends. They worked and ate food together. The animals loved themselves so much but one day, the lion and went for hunting while hare was staying at home. When they reached the forest, they saw a zebra and the zebra escaped. Lion did not get the zebra and they checked all the forest, they did not find any animal in the forest and indeed the three animals were hungry.

Hare then set off his journey to the forest to find food. On his way to the forest, he found the lion resting under the shade of the tree and he told lion to wake up. While the lion was waking up, there was a big hole near them. Lion did not see the big hole; lion fell into the big hole. Hare went to call monkey, they did not meet. After a short moment, monkey arrived while lion was very hungry, he told monkey that; “please help me, pull me out.” Monkey said; “Will you not eat me?” lion responded; “Yes, I will not eat you, you are among the best friends of mine.” Then monkey pulled out lion. Later lion said; “I am very hungry and there is no food to eat, so you are my food.”

After a short moment, hare arrived and inquired why the two were quarrelling; monkey explained the issue and hare told lion to jump into the big hole again. Lion jumped back into the hole. Hare told monkey; “I want to see how you pulled out the lion in the big hole because when we pull lion out again, he will eat us.”

A Journey to South Western Uganda by Medina Mbabazi Bilali, Munir Primary School

Last month, primary five pupils of Lokutua Primary School visited South Western Uganda. They were led by their teacher Miss Aseru, Mrs Medina, Mrs Naima and Mr Odoi. Their headmistress Mrs Rashida prayed for their safe journey. After the prayer, she asked them to behave well while on the bus do not shout or throw rubbish through the window, she warned on entering the bus. The driver Mr Asega reminded the pupils to fasten their seatbelts. No body carried extra luggage except Miss Yasaba for the luggage belonged to her neighbour Mr Kayihura. She didn’t have bus fare to travel upcountry. You do not need a ticket for this luggage joked the conductor. The luggage would be offloaded at Muhanga trading centre.

When they were about to reach at Buwama Town, some pupils shouted, the equator! The equator! We want to see the equator, stop the bus for we are at the most important latitude Mr Odoi said as the bus stopped. The pupils eagerly jumped out of the bus at the equator. Both the pupils and their teachers jumped posed for photos at the equator before their departure. The moment they left Masaka town, Mr Asega started driving fast; we are soon reaching Lake Mburo National Park said one of the teachers said. The pupils requested the driver to slow that in order not to knock any wild animal crossing the road. Though the bus did not stop at Lake Mburo National Park, the pupils saw a few wild animals. They saw zebras and antelopes along the high way while buffaloes were seen in a distance.

Faiza informed her classmate that what they saw was just a fraction of the animals in the park, other animals like giraffes could be found after traveling deep inside the park. On reaching Mbarara town, the pupils had lunch at Mbarara University’s restaurant. Mr Itoma had prepared their lunch earlier on. After lunch, Miss Aseru asked the pupils to board the bus again, we have to leave for Kabale and reach Lake Bunyonyi early she explained.

On reaching Kabale town, they branched off the main road and headed for Lake Bunyonyi. At Lake Bunyonyi, the pupils enjoyed the beauty of the lake. They also liked motorised boat ride and bird watching. The pupils and their teachers spent their night at Kabale-Bukinda primary teachers college; it was a day very well spent.

The following day, they travelled to Kisoro town, after reaching the town they immediately went to Mgahinga National Park where they saw mountain gorillas mainly of the Nyakigezi family. They were happy to see the birds and animals in Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi National Park. The pupils learnt many things from the journey to South-Western Uganda.

Newspapers in Uganda by Minallah Shamimu, Munir Primary School

In Uganda, newspapers are read by both adult and children. There are many newspapers in Uganda which are New Vision, Daily Month, the weekly Observer are the most common English Newspaper; Bukedde, Etop, Orumuri and Rupiny are the most common newspapers published in local language. Last Thursday, Mr Okiror our science teacher bought two newspapers. He bought Etop and Daily Monitor. During lunch time, Huda and Madrama asked Mr Okorir why he bought the newspapers.

Mr Okiror told them that Etop is the Ateso version of New Vision newspaper. It published news like its English sister paper. The news he wanted was from his area. Newspapers published in local languages are only read by people who understand those languages. He also remained them that people who understand English newspapers; he bought Daily Monitor for a change. Muhanga Primary School buys only New Vision newspaper.

Both the teacher and pupils are happy, where the school buys the newspaper they also have job advertisement programme for television and radio station. The newspapers also report on education, health, the environment, parliament and many others. The headlines are mostly about politics while the back pages mostly carry sports news. There are puzzles and cartoons in the newspaper. Some newspaper come with magazine pull outs for children, these are mainly in the New Vision and Daily Monitor newspaper.

In Uganda, people prefer magazines to the newspaper; this is because the magazines publish interesting stories, poems, puzzles, pictures and cartoons. These are mainly about children whom they should not miss reading because newspapers are very educative.

In Lusozi village, there lived a man called Kamese. This man was given that name by the village members because his mother gave birth to him when he was small as a rat. Surprisingly, Kamese grew into a fat and tall man. Unfortunately, Kamese’s parents didn’t have money to pay his school fees so Kamese never went to school though this never failed him from fulfilling his dreams.

Kamese had a plan of educating his children. He did this because he never got any chance to go to school. Therefore when he married his wife, he asked his father to give him a piece of land which he built a hut on because he never had money to build a big house from. Kamese and his wife were blessed with four children, two boys and two girls. Even when Kamese’s children grew, he never rushed to build a big house. He instead continued to work hard while saving money which he would use to pay school fees for his children.

Residents of Lusozi used to laugh at his house but this didn’t bother him. This is because Kamese knew that educating his children is an investment. Kamese frequently talked to his children and asked them to take education very serious for which they also understood. After few years, Mukisa; Kamese’s first born graduated as a surgeon. After his graduation, he was employed at Mulago Hospital. Just after three years, Grace Kamese’s second born also graduated as an engineer. These two children worked and build a storeyed house for their parents. They also started a poultry farm for their parents from which Kamese and his wife earned from money.

Once upon a time, there was a very small but clever animal called Ichuli. He liked meat very much but he was weak that he could not kill any animal for food. So he was always hungry. One day, he sat down and thought of a trick. At last he knew how he could get some meat.

Ichuli knew that there was a hyena that lived far away. He wanted to ask Mr Hyena to help him get some meat. He had to walk a long, long way through very dark forest. He was afraid that some animal might see him and want to eat him. He walked slowly and looked around carefully before he went across an open land. He was frightened. He saw many animals along the way. He wanted to catch some to catch some of them and kill to have a good meal, but he remembered that he was small and weak. He knew that Mr Hyena would help him get some very good meat to eat. He began to hurry through the forest to Mr Hyena’s house. When he arrived there, he said; “Mr Hyena, I want to get some meat today. Will you help me?”

Mr Hyena answered; “That is a good idea! I want to get some meat today too. How can I help you?” Ichuli was very pleased. He moved nearer to Mr Hyena and said; “there are many animals on this mountain. If we go up there now, we might kill one. Let’s go up and see what we can find.” Ichuli who knew the way walked in front. Suddenly he stopped and said; “This is where the animals pass when they come down. Now stay here and I’ll go up and chase them. But you must listen and be very careful. If you hear a low sound you will know that a stone was kicked by an animal. Move quickly to the side. If you hear a sharp sound, you will know that an animal is coming. You must stand and wait to stop it. Do you understand?” Mr Hyena said that he understood.

Ichuli climbed up the mountain. He pushed down a very big stone which made a rumbling sound. Mr Hyena heard the stone falling and moved quickly to the side. Ichuli broke sticks to make a sharp sound and then threw down a small stone very hard. Mr Hyena stood in the way and turned his left ear towards it. The stone hit his head so hard that he fell down and died. Ichuli ran down the mountain asking; “Mr Hyena where are you? Where is the animal? Have you killed it?” But Mr Hyena could not answer this, he was already dead.

“Foolish Hyena! Don’t you know about my clever tricks?” Ichuli said proudly as he carried the dead Hyena to his house and ate him up.

A Story About Sanyu Radia by Medina Mbabazi Bilal, Munir Primary School

There lived a girl in our neighbourhood called Sanyu Radia. Sanyu Radia is a 14 year’s old living with her parents. She is a pupil in primary 5, studying in Lukutua Primary School. She is very hard working girl both at home and school. All the teachers at her school loves her so much, she is the Head Girl of their school. She is so popular with everyone, kind, tolerant and God fearing. She has almost all the character of a leader, ever smart and her parents love her so much because of her good characters.
One day, I asked her to tell me why she is schooling in Lukutua Primary School and yet Munir Primary School is the nearest school to her, she told me that she prefers schooling in a far distance school. At first where she was staying with her elder sister in Odravu sub-county, she was schooling in a far distance school in Kumina Primary School. She does not like schools near their home, whereby when you feel hungry; you just rush home at any time you feel like. Sanyu Radia does not like that habit. She also told me that schooling in a nearby school will make her lazy all the time and again it will make her wake up for school late. Her being in Lukutua is good for her and she always wakes up early and does all the works she has to do in time and goes to school early. Sanyu Radia is the last born in their family and loved by her parents.

She helps her parents a lot during holidays. She does also domestic work and farming too. Whatever she asks from her parents, they give her without any hesitation because she helps them a lot. She also gives total respect to her parents, you cannot find Sanyu playing or staying at someone else’s home doing nothing. If she has nothing to do at their home, she goes inside her room and revises her books and does her homework.

One day my mother sent me to the market to buy for her a half kilogram of beef instead I bought for her a kilogram of beef, yet she told me to return some of the balance back to be used the next day. Reaching home, my mother saw the meat and requested for her balance. I told her that I didn’t hear her well; I thought she had told me to buy a kilo of meat. My mother was very annoyed with me, she said; “I wish I had a child life Sanyu Radio, her parents never gets angry with her because she always makes her parents happy.”

One weekend I went to Sanyu’s home to narrate to her what annoyed my mother, she was not happy with me and told me that what I did was wrong. Whenever her mother sends her to the market, she records each and everything such that with the list, she can buy everything she has been sent for without any complain. The following day, I also went with Sanyu to wash clothes at our borehole. On our way to the borehole, I asked her to be my best friend so that she may continue advising me for which she accepted only on condition that accept to be corrected of my mistakes. She also asked me again; “why do you want me to be your friend?” I told her that she has good behaviours, hardworking, her parents loves her and gives her all that she needs at any time she is in need of. I requested her further to teach me such that I be like her, she replied that; “If I want to be like her, I should respect my parents and be a hardworking girl, help them whenever they need your help.”

In our neighbourhood, each and everyone talks about Sanyu Radia’s good behaviours. I used not to cook food and neither washed clothes of my young sisters but after seeing the advantage of helping parents from Sanyu Radia I changed immediately. I started asking my mother about dirty clothes she has. I do each and every work my mother asks me to do.

One evening when I was from school, I heard my mother’s voice praising me to one of our neighbour’s that my daughter has changed totally, she is now doing all the work I ask her to do for me without any complain. These days she stays with Maimuna’s daughter, Sanyu Radia. She might have changed her, I thank God for that. I wish you also send your daughter Sauda to join them too and become a helpful girl as mine now. “I will go home and tell my daughter about Sanyu Radia’s behaviours and would encourage her to join her as soon as possible to become a good girl in this village of Oyaru,” said my mother’s neighbour.

I want to be given that love that Sanyu Radia’s parents have for her by my parents too.

Facts about covid19, living through the covid19 pandemic is unlike anything I have experienced before. Covid19 is a deadly virus said to have mutated from bats and maybe pangolins. This virus started from Wuhan pet market in China where bats, alligators and other animals are sold. Covid19 has spread all over the world including Africa. As the cases began to rise in Uganda the government decided to lockdown the country. The spread of the virus led to the closure of schools and learners had to study from home. This did not affect me because I was already home schooling. I am really glad that Covid19 has not hindered my progress in school. The pandemic has given me time to spend with my family, reading novels and playing netball as well as acquiring new skills and I also made new friends in the neighbourhood. Life has actually been interesting and exciting in its own way.

Covid19 has had both positive and negative effects. The waves of covid19 have killed many of our friends and family. The main positive effect in lockdown has been that infection rates reduced. Sadly people have struggled to survive because with no income to get their basic needs. During the covid19, it brought different cases like early pregnancies, school dropout which increased crime rates. But nevertheless, my life right now is quiet and praise God. For the happy times in this pandemic. At the moment we are out of the lockdown and life is more like it used to be. Thankfully, the Independence Day has come and soon we are going to break up for holidays and life is getting back normally.

We need to pray to God for deliverance of our country. For if our country is destroyed the people will be destroyed as well; the government should continue to make sure that people are vaccinated. If this is done, people will have more freedom to work so that they can make more money. Personal discipline is also necessary. If we obey the standard operating procedures put in place by government, we shall defeat the corona virus. I pray that God will give our leaders wisdom to make the right decisions. I also pray that God will drive us from the corona virus.

I promise that one day covid19 pandemic will be history and everything will be as it used to be.

Fred did not expect to be picked for the Hatari school team to play in the football match against the local league champions. He was on the reserve list, but when one of the teammates fell ill, he was chosen for the final match against their main rivals, Utawona. Before the game, the team manager, Mr Burua talked to them. “Remember,” he said “Utawona are much the stronger team, especially with one of our best forwards off sick.” The manager paused and looked at Fred. “You will all need to work together to make sure that our forward line is well supported.”

Fred smiled nervously, but inwardly he felt very worried. Although most of the team were very friendly, one of the players, Ndezi, a big powerful boy did not like Fred and would not kick the ball to him during the practice games. Both teams ran out onto the field to cheers from the spectators. The two team captains tossed a coin, the players took up their positions and the referee blew his whistle. The game started and the commentators began telling their listeners what was happening on the field. Play was evenly matched during the first half. The Utawona team was the first to score. A cross kick by one of their midfield player’s was headed into goal by their team captain. There was a roar of excitement from their supporters, but Fred’s team swiftly counter-attacked. The ball went out of play, and the other team took throw in. Fred jumped as high as he could, but failed to gain possession of the ball, and the other side kicked the ball forward; then the linesman awarded Fred’s team a free kick when one of the Utawona’s team was offside. The ball flew straight into the goal. It was now half time and score was even.

After the break, Fred’s team found that they were the defenders. They tried hard to beat off the attack on their goal by the Utawona team. Suddenly, Ndezi tripped up an opponent and the referee declared a foul. The fans were now very excited and whistled at the decision. The referee awarded a penalty kick, which the opposing team took within the penalty area. The Utawona striker kicked straight at the ball, but the Hatari goal keeper stopped it from going in preventing him from scoring. As the game continued, Fred began to feel more confident. Nothing had been added to the score and there was only five minutes left to play. The other side took a corner kick. Fred ran forward to receive the ball. He dodged a member of the opposing team and raced down the field. Just before he was tackled, he kicked the ball as hard as he could towards the goal and in it went. The fans roared with excitement, and waved their arms in the air. The referee blew his whistle. The game was over. Fred had the winning goal and the Utawona team were defeated 2-1.

When the cup was awarded, the Hatari coach congratulated the team on their win. The captain looked at Fred with a smile and said, “Thank You sir, we all worked hard during the match, but the honours must go to our newest team member, Banya Fred. He is the real hero of the match.”
